Saw
this the other day and I can't stop thinking about it. It really made me feel quite sick.
I've come to the conclusion that we can either pride ourselves on being civilised OR put heads on spikes. We can't do both.
*sigh* I don't like being serious.

That article behind the link can't possibly be serious, can it? Display dead bodies? Eurghhh!
Well, I guess it is. Some people go off the deep end...

Date: 2011-05-05 08:31 am (UTC)That's the first clause in this idiot's beginning sentence and it tells those of us who have had to suffer through their abuse, that this guy is one of the radical Right here in the States.
These are the people who are angry that a black man was elected President (despite the fact that their Party ran a pair of low-IQ clowns against him)and have been doing whatever they can to divert focus from the real problems that need dealt with to claiming The President isn't an actual citizen or whatever other insane thing they can come up with. They have that little respect for people and ideas different than their own.
Also, the said mosque was several blocks away from "Ground Zero" and was to be a community center for anyone who lived nearby to come exercise, for kids to go to after school, or have meetings, etc., similar to a YMCA. The radical Right went off on it with an intense "mis-information campaign" because of their general intolerance of anyone/anything not W.A.S.P.
Just ignore him. He's a crazy person who is not representative of most of us.

However,
I have been appalled that the ones in charge didn't allow officials from the various other Countries who have been attacked to come and verify for their people. I thought they got rid of the body too quickly.
I'd like to be able to argue the angle of honouring the Islamic traditions for the rest of Islam, but I genuinely feel that so much damage has been done by bin Laden's plots and plans that he abdicated this religion and his "right" to privacy. Other peoples / societies deserve the respect of being able to confirm that the criminal who masterminded attacks on their citizens is definitely dead, to possibly even take their own DNA samples and so forth, to be satisfied first hand - Not parts on pikes, just closure.
Once the rest of the World who have been impacted by Al Qaeda have had a chance to have a trusted official see / hear / confirm, certainly no more than a week, then the idea of a non-shrine-able spot or cremation is fine. But, I sincerely think they moved too fast and insulted the other Countries who have been hurt more than the good that was done by respecting Islamic customs.
But, yeah, no pikes.
