Am I the only person who feels rather sad that the Lord Chancellor is being dispensed with? And his Woolsack? There have been Lord Chancellors for over a thousand years, the Woolsack's quite modern, only about six hundred years old(not the same one, they get worn out in fifty years or so. All my favourite kings had Lord Chancellors - Henry 2nd had Thomas a Beckett (not perhaps a good example, that), Henry 8th had both Thomas More and Cardinal Wolsey (he's not a favourite king but I can remember his chancellors so I put him in). I know that we have to move with the times but tradition is about the only thing we do really well in the UK so is it a good idea to sweep away so many years of history? It's also rather annoying that, as part of the same reorganisation, the Welsh and Scottish are losing their full-time permanent under-secretaries and gaining part-time representation instead. Not a good trade.
So let us have our Lord Chancellor back! He wears a nice long frock and a long woolly wig like the back end of a sheep. I have only the vaguest idea what he does - something to do with overseeing the activities of law professionals without any 'party' bias - but just seeing him raises my spirits. To replace him with some boring Governmental brown-nose in a suit is criminal.
On a less happy note, tonight I finally gave up, admitted that I am totally inadequate and joined Weight Watchers. Since starting my diet I have put on four pounds so I'm obviously doing something terribly wrong. The combination of financial outlay and ritual humiliation at the meetings is bound to have some effect! I am prepared to admit that as one ages ones girth increases but I am fed up with feeling stuff shifting when I turn over in bed - it all takes a while to settle - and I am annoyed that I can't draw my 50lb longbow. Colin and Sal and Co will be doing a Late Medieval show for us next May and I'd like to be fit enough to join in - pipe dreams maybe but something to work towards.
