Sep. 13th, 2003 11:59 pmReally cheerful tonight because I've been watching the Last Night at the Proms. UK readers will know about this but for those of you who don't this is enormous fun! Every year the BBC run a series of 'Promenade Concerts' at the Royal Albert Hall. They have all kinds of classical music, some of which is very highbrow, but the last one of the season always runs to a formula. Everybody dresses up, they throw streamers, blow hooters and join in the choruses of all the arias. Some of the students from the Royal School of Music stand behind the conductor in their evening suits and conduct as well and the orchestra plays little musical practical jokes on each other.
at home we watch as the audience 'moshes' to the music and we join in all the songs - Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Wood - and belt out Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. For one night a year we can pretend that we are proud to be British and forget that we owe an apology to just about every other nation on the globe! It's even better if you've been drinking! As I have. This year we made Mike watch as well and he was quite smitten, nobody crowd surfed but he said that it looked like good fun.
Mike is good fun too. Or at least a source of fun. He persuaded me to order him some clothes from Attitude.com and has been going to school in these truly enormous trousers with pockets everywhere and dangly straps. With his comparatively narrow chest he looks like a pyramid. Over this he has been wearing a 'duster' coat that billows behind him when he is in a hurry. He says that all the firsties scatter before him then form up behind and start humming the Empire March from the Star Wars suite.
Jenny confirms this and says that, to her disgust, some of her friends have been asking for his autograph! Mike Vader has been taking the trouble to stop and look after the dear little things and they tell Jenny she's lucky to have such a cool brother! she's not convinced!
