essayelThanks a bunch to all the people who helped me to make up my mind about my little Malfoy problem. The scores were as follows: two for het, two for gay, three for bi and one, shame on you, for the sheep. So...as they say...the 'Bi's have it! I still haven't got a title but have another snippet anyway:
“I’ll be lunching with Fudge,” Lucius told him. “The man has a bee in his bonnet about the Head of Home Affairs who is, apparently, having one with a steno-witch from my department.” He paused, eyeing Draco thoughtfully through the steam rising off their mock turtle soup. “What advice would you give him?”
“Head of Home Affairs?” Draco put his spoon down. This often happened at mealtimes, virtually the only occasion he and his father met casually, and he quite relished the challenge. “That’s Montgomery Mitchell, isn’t it? Muggleborn, educated at Hogwarts, took his Newts in 1961, married one of the Toques – good old pureblood family. Does the little woman know?”
“She’s probably about the only one who doesn’t,” Lucius replied, leaning back and watching Draco’s mind working with relish. “Mitchell has scarcely been discreet.”
“So Sadie Mitchell, nee Toque, does not know but, the rumour mill being what it is, it can only be a matter of days until she finds out. The Toques have a certain history, do they not, Father? A history of taking family pride seriously. Mitchell must be mad to risk being found as an assortment of bodyparts floating down the Ribble.” He paused again, thinking hard. “I would tell Fudge – sorry, advise the Minister - that it should be impressed upon Mitchell that the affair has to end, behaviour unbecoming and all that, and that he must confess to his wife. She will either stand firm and support him in public and make his life hell in private or Cruciate him until his brains dribble out of his ears. Either way he will be so vulnerable that ‘spending more time with his family while he still has one’ will be an easy option to push him into or, if he won’t go, you could always transfer him to Misuse of Muggle Artifacts , might as well put all the liabilities together. Then his Deputy can take over the department; Tarquin Pilking knows where our best interests lie.” He picked up his spoon again and dipped it into his soup before adding, “And since a labourer is worthy of her hire I assume you have made arrangements for the steno-witch’s discreet promotion?”
“She is,” Lucius said without the trace of a smile, “a good little worker – quite tireless in fact and provision has been made for her. However, to return to the hierarchy of Home Affairs, it has been suggested to me that perhaps Tarquin is a little inexperienced and, given the current tense situation, a – shall we say – steadier hand upon the wand might be in order.”
“And with the appointment of HHoA comes an automatic seat on the Council.” Draco commented and took another sip of soup.
The two Malfoy men looked at each other for a moment in perfect understanding, reflecting that ‘Councilman Malfoy’ did have a certain ring to it, then Narcissa asked for the salt and Draco realised that his soup was chilling and there was no further discussion of the matter.
Many thanks to Shezan for the book titles re: the Blackshirts especially since mentioning it to my Mother led her to tell me the family history regarding the British Fascist Party - Grandpa had a knock ,drag out row with Oswald himself from which he emerged with honours! Yay for the common working man!!
