LOL, the Archers is probably the world's oldest soap opera. It's a radio show set in a small village in a made up county in England and has storylines featuring organic vegetable production and whether a Holstein/Hereford mix is more lucrative than a Holstein/Charolais for beef production with all the usual mixtures of unfaithful partners and passion amid the haystacks. Bearing in mind that virtually everything else gets fan fiction written about it the thought just wandered through my mind.
And they do actually have a couple of gay characters - a farmer and one of the chefs from the local hotel - though it was about six months before either of them realised the other was, if you know what I mean. When a series has been in continuous production since about 1954 the writers can afford to take their time.
