You have to hand it to our IT department. They really know how to get a bargain.

Some time ago we were told we were in line for some replacement technology. Cool! New laptop, internet connection at my desk so I can log onto the mainframe where my files are stored and limited WWW access so, for instance, I can use www.wildwinds.com to identify and catalogue the ancient and classical coins. Also a replacement digital camera and, a really major need, an A3 flat bed scanner.

Most of that has turned up. However instead of the big scanner we have been given a pen shaped object that we are told will scan text into a Ms Word doc. One holds it vertical - no really vertical, it doesn't work on a slant and moves it across the text one line at a time at a pace comparable to typing the text with one finger. And this is what you get:

The scanned text is sent to the PC with the following r~s~lj. The scanned text is sent to the PC with the tallowing result: In non-Auto SEUq u~oqe eelecilu~ eeuq ~h!~~ es~t~ ~~e sexy ~o SVS bC. The hglowirig –a~rj~ r~x’s~ awesome) 4**~- J;”1f~a~~ 3,. Make sure the same Microsott Woro lae aS ursule lb uVeu uul Lue rL. 1~xa

As you can imagine it is going to be REALLY handy for scanning the photographic collection to make it more accessible.

In other news the dog had me up at 5.30 because he was wanting a walk. This maybe why I'm more than usually peeved about the above.
