Should have posted this yesterday but I got distracted by a heavy duty plotting session in Morningstar Manor. Thank goodness for saved drafts.

TodayYesterday I baked ox liver until it is almost dry and cut it into tiny cubes and I'm moving round the house with a comet tail of animals, all of whom want to be my BFF. Also they keep showing me where the fridge is in case I've forgotten.

Unrelated to that - today I went to see Star Trek.

It was okay. To be honest from seeing all the posts about it I'd been expecting to be blown out of the water by it, like I was with Pirates of the Caribbean and that just didn't happen. However I did enjoy spotting the new spin they had put on the cliches. Oh and Simon Pegg. He was just lovely.

Various things occurred to me while watching:

Someone must have gone down to Design and said "We want a spaceship that looks totally EVIL. You know - you've seen Mad Max" and Design thought that he meant the crew as well. Mind you, fashion can change a lot in 300 years so maybe the Romulans did go down the tattoos and no washing route.

Why is it no woman whose width exceeds 20% of her height can have a job on a star ship? Oh wait they were all cadets weren't they? And presumably Star Fleet rejects candidates on the grounds of puppy fat.

Why is it that Star Fleet is so disorganised that the fleet's new flag ship had to be staffed by cadets. I know it was a bit of a crisis but you don't crew a thing like that on impulse. Captain Pike would have handpicked his officers. If it was ready to fly they'd have had a crew ready too, and certainly have a pilot who knew when to check the brakes. And DEFINITELY wouldn't have put a loose cannon like Kirk in a position of authority. BUT I suppose that's the whole point of the thing.

Kirk - spot on. He's still the egotistical tit I disliked on my first watch through in 1967 [or was it 68?]

Spock - eerily good. Quinto had the mannerisms down pat.

Bones - was a bit of a one trick pony. I'd have liked to have seen him being an excellent doctor as well as Mr Angry and a bit of light relief.

Scotty - oh *loves* A very different interpretation from James Doohan, but I liked it. Also Sulu and that stupid but oh so cool sword and Chekov! of course if you have an application like an enormous and complex computer game, the best person to run it is a 17 yr old lad with reflexes honed by HOURS of WOW or Halo or that centuries equivalent.

Uhura - nice to see a bright, confident girl certain of her own worth but that stuff with Spock? Eh, what? Also my husband said he really missed Nichelle Nicholls fantastic legs and lush curves. Tastes may have changed a bit but surely guys don't ALL lust after youths with boobs?

Special effects - they were good. I liked how the explosions were audible inside the ship and went to silence outside.

So verdict - if there are more films in the series I'll go and see them, but I don't think I'll be writing any fan fic. I got that out of my system in 1970.

Today I'm all on my own in the museum, with a cold and another spreadsheet to do. So *grumps*

Yeah, I noticed they were all *very* thin even by Hollywood standards. Simon Pegg looked huge just because he's not malnourished (reportedly).

Loved the Romulan look, though. But as my boy said: "It's sad to see Eric Bana wasted like that."

Yup, it is.

Poor you. I hope the day does not turn out too bad and you get well soon.

Thanks for posting this - I wasn't sure whether to go see it or not because I felt it was definitely something for the younger generation and after hearing the "soundtrack" (as someone who listens to dance music from the 1930s, I use the term loosely) I think I'll wait for video or PPV...

Yeah. I am sick of seeing skinny bodies and huge bobble-heads on the screen.

Batya's reaction to the Romulan ship was that it was clearly a ripoff of the bad guys' ship in Galaxy Quest.

Which for my money is the best Star Trek film aside from Wrath of Khan.

I still haven't seen Star Trek, and don't know when I'm going to be able to, so I'm hanging onto every word of review/critique/spoiler that I see!

First run in the UK was 1969 - it started the same week as the Apollo 11 launch, because they were both covered in the same issue of Radio Times (I've still got the Star Trek pages!).

I also remember it was billed as a replacement for Dr Who after Patrick Troughton left. Or that was what one of my friends' mothers said to me as I mourned the lack of Who.

A lot of people have seen this Star Trek movie, but I don't think I will. I loved the original series, with original characters and I can't/won't visualise other people playing them. Guess that makes me a bit sad!!

Oh I can understand that. I was horrified to hear Mel Gibson, of all people, wants to remake Edge of Darkness.
