Nostalgia trip
Jun. 28th, 2009 10:17 amYou can waste so much time on Youtube but this morning I think it was worth it.
A post by
bitchy_brat reminded me of something and while I was looking for it I found a load of other things so I thought I'd post them here. Most are so old, or so British, they might be new to some of my flist.
Also,
metallumai, some of them might amuse your little tiddler.
Paul McCartney and We All Stand Together aka Rupert and the Frog Song and the more recently released Tropic Island Hum.
1975 psychadelia with Roger Glover's 'Love is All' sung by Ronnie James Dio.
Monkey Business fom the Spider cartoon series that we all adored when the kids were little. Still do actually. Jen came and sat with me and we sang along. Here's another one Spider's Song that's a real tear jerker.
Even further back in time, Episode One of Ivor the Engine. Every Welsh cliche possible in these little cartoons which were made the old fashioned way with bits of paper and scissors and talent. My personal favourite is Episode Two. The very first version was mde for TV in 1959 in black and white but these are the fancy new fangled coloured ones made in the 70s when colour TVs were becoming more popular.
Oliver Postgate, who made Ivor, was a STAR, and I was glued to the TV to watch the adventures of Noggin the Nog. Don't care that it's in b/w, the voice is still wonderful. He also made a lot of fun stuff. Like The Clangers. I can't imagine any TV executive these days giving the go ahead for a series about pink knitted space mice but they were gentler times. It's interesting to note that though the 'words' are whistled there had to be a script for the powers to approve. Postgate got into trouble at one point when he had one of the adult clangers say, of a jammed door, "Oh no, the bloody thing's stuck again". He had to revise the script to 'blooming'. Gentler but sillier times perhaps?
Speaking of silly, I was brought up with these pirates. Captain Pugwash has been much maligned because the makers were supposed to have been a bit wicked and introduced characters such as Master Bates and Roger the Cabin Boy, but I can confirm that it was Tom the Cabin Boy and Master Mate. Also the good Captain's nemesis, Cutthroat Jake looks just like the late Luciano Pavarotti. What's not to like?
Oh Memory Lane! Such a nice walk on a sunny morning.
