Actually I hope there isn't and that it's all random, because if there IS a Higher Control Freak deciding that this person should flourish and that should suffer - "Oooh I wonder what happens if I do this?" - then he/she/it is a bloody cruel bastard and I hate what passes for their guts.
Maybe the Christians are right. Remember what Job went through just so Himself could settle a bet.
