I've been looking for and listening to vids of Tuvan throat singing - yeah, wierd, but it's for something I'm writing, naturally - and I found this. Isn't it nice to see an ancient art brought more or less up to date?
One of the UK filkers we had around a few years ago (he's moved to the US now - our loss, their gain!) had been to Mongolia, and learnt Mongolian overtone throat-singing, called Khoomiy. He tried to teach us all how to do it, but I can't manage it...
There's this pesky circular breathing thing, no idea how it works. I think it's fascinating and have a theory that it apes the sound of bagpipes - with the drone below and the melody above - and is a sensible thing to do for a nomadic society that doesn't want to cart too much stuff around. Why have bagpipes when you can make the sound yourself?
This one? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6DP1aFeHbs) I love it. I realy like wierd covers. The Red Hot Chilli Pipers' cover of We Will Rock You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3b573x7iPw) is fantastic.
