May. 4th, 2010 06:09 pmHappy birthday,
vashtan! And many more of them.
Today I have been mostly telling kids about World War 2. Or at least as much of World War 2 as you can fit into 20 minute bites. In the end I sat bunches down in the air raid shelter and turned on an Imperial War museum recording of a raid. They seemed to enjoy that.
Enjoying it seems a bit of a contradiction in terms. They shouldn't think that something so utterly horrible as being bombed is fun but if it isn't at least somewhat enjoyable they don't cooperate and are generally arsey about it all. However they were impressed with the idea of staying up all night due to a raid and then STILL having to go to school the next day and appalled at the thought of having no washing water for 6 weeks [as happened to my mum in the east end of London].
I was so tempted to point out that there are people today for whom taking cover from bombing on the way to work and school is a part of everyday life and many many others who aren't in war zones for whom a nice hot shower is mythical - in fact for whom a thin stream of cold water out of a tap would be a huge improvement over a 3 mile walk to a muddy stream and back with a bucket. But that wasn't my brief - they'll find out about that soon enough.
