I'm reading, and loving, A Distant Soil by Colleen Doran, which is now online. Okay, some of it is a bit - fluffy - and OMG it's pretty, My Little Pony pretty [the panel where D'rem and Seren appear in a big swirl of hair and fairy dust made me LOL], but she drew the first sections in her teens so I forgive her. And I'm blown away by the art work. It's astounding! But the reason I'm blethering on about it is because of this page. It's not often you see a bit of Welsh in a comic!

I read this ages ago, and remember that under the fluff is real emotion. And that Doran was once one of the rising stars in the field. I haven't heard much from her in a long while.

It's posted on a blog that is being updated daily now and she often comments that she's got new deals for work. She seems to be working steadily, even if not a household name. I found A Distant Soil because I was impressed with some of her work for The Sandman and googled for her. I'm nothing like a comic aficionado so I wouldn't know how well she is regarded, but all her work is HAND drawn, including most of the hatching and stippling, and I know from experience how hard that is. I'm vastly impressed even with her early stuff.

The whole thing, so far, has been reprinted and you can buy it from Amazon but I believe that she intends to finally finish the story!

I recognize "ach y fi"! Or at least, I recognize that it's sort of an "ugh" exclamation, though I've never known the literal meaning. *G*
