There are some pretty iconic images there.

Also half naked young man being disciplined.

Hmm

I think I might have to lie down as well.

Oh hush you!! You'll be getting me all hot and bothered again ;)

Half naked young men aside, I must say that it was the RN Captain with the smart blue jacket that really caught my eye! Who is that guy??!

What rally cracks me up about this vid is that these guys are from Kilmarnock! I had no idea it was such a hotbed of piracy. So to speak ;)

There's something about the RN uniform that just begs for the wearer to be 'mussed'.

I'm quite disappointed that my naval lieutenant is too early to have a uniform. It would have been such fun to write the metaphor of his standards slowly slipping as the uniform disintegrates.

Is that icon Geoff Hunt? I like Geoff Hunt.

Definitely. Begs for it. Such a shame they killed the captain in the video. What a waste! ;)

my naval lieutenant
You have your own naval lieutenant? With slipping standards?? Tell me more!

Think the icon is Geoff Hunt but I couldn't be sure. I was bad one night and pinched a pile of ship images, some of which were Hunt's, and turned them into icons. Feel free to take any you fancy!

I think it's Hunt's HMS Agamemnon with a bit of a tweak to the sunset end of the colourscale. Lovely stuff.

My ex-Lt Penrose is one of the protagonists in my ongoing Nano pirate thingy. He started off pale and interesting and dressed like a Quaker after losing his ship and being courtmartialled for it. Now he's tanned and dishevelled, has a forcibly applied earring that he didn't want at all, and his standards have slid a LONG way. About all he has left is the determination not to give into temptation and roger/be rogered by the captain of the ship no matter how jolly it might be. Men of principle are such fun to corrupt.

By Jove! I do believe you're right. Well spotted.

Your ex-Lt Penrose sound like a very interesting young chap. Is he ready for reading?

Men of principle are such fun to corrupt.
Especially when they are sooo determined not to give in to temptation... ;)

Mr Penrose is in a very hasty first draft at the moment - Nanowrimo plus a determination to give the people who were reading along in Gdocs a daily cliffhanger meant that there are loads of problems - but there are snippets posted throughout November. Like this one (http://essayel.livejournal.com/151041.html). I have to do masses of research about everything, but especially ships, before bothering my betas, the poor dears. :D

Oooh that's very intriguing! I'd definitely read more of that!

Kit parted his coat tails to prevent creasing
Parted coat tails? Mmmmmmm.... Sorry, I have a filthy mind ;)

LOL

And there you go, see. Not sure if coats in the 17 teens HAD tails to part. That's the sort of mistake that has the 'historical types' waving torches and pitchforks and piling faggots on the village green [if I'm still allowed to say that? I know what I mean.]

*sharpens pitchfork* I think coats may have had skirts (which could also be parted rather fetchingly ;)

Oh yes, very fetching (http://www.costumes.org/history/quicherat/Gentihommealamodede1693.JPG). I've downloaded a pattern for one of those coats but can't see whether the back is solid or split. I'm assuming solid now, with that nice inset bit at the side allowing some flare when riding.

Mmm yes very nice indeed. I'm not well up on civilian clothes from this period but I consulted Amy Miller's uniform porn Dressed to Kill and there is a picture of a gorgeous 1748 pattern lieutenants undress frock with deep boot cuffs, full skirts and two buttons either side of the central back vent. A bit late for your period perhaps but I believe naval uniform tended to copy older fashions.
