Let him sleep, of course, but I might take his hand.

Another Tabi incident last night. She was on my lap while I was reading - glasses off because I didn't want anything between me and GRRM's deathless prose* - and we both saw a mouse trotting across the floor at the same moment. She leaped off my lap and went for it. I put my glasses on and so was able to see the expression on her face as she put the brakes on and went "OMG SPIDER!" I did too. Lumpen though I am I can still get all of myself onto the seat of my chair when there's a spider on the floor and especially when it's one big enough for me to spot without my glasses.

Sizz noticed it too and joined Tabi in following it all around the room at a respectful distance until Himself got irritated by all the activity and did the old mug and paper trick to take it outside - where I imagine it spent the night hunting rats.

Okay, it wasn't a big spider, body about the size of the top of my finger, legs *shudder* honestly I didn't look that closely. But to this self confessed arachnophobe it was the size of a saucer.

* figure of speech. I've never read any novelist, other than Sven Hassell, who kills SO many people. Martin is one of the people who make me want to stop storytelling because he's already said everything I'd like to say only so much better.

Was that shelob's kin or aragog's. bcause both are fictional but succeeded in making me afraid of spiders for the rest of my life. oh good. then marti nis very very good if it makes you want to pack up. because hello? if any agent rejects yoru prose i'll get out my standard agent-threats again (which was my uber-enthusiastic comment en lieu of cheering someone on when they tried to submit something...)

Martin is brilliant. The stories aren't nice - horrible things happen to good people because the villains actually DO awful things rather than just threatening, and sometimes it's for no good reason, which makes it worse - but the way they are constructed is just stunning. Highly recommended (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Game-Thrones-Song-Fire-Book/dp/0307913090/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1302720294&sr=8-1).

And thanks for the encouragement. More stories on the way.

Honestly? He does the "How" very skillfully, I agree, but your characters seem infinitely nicer and more decent than his.

Good luck with the spiders. I hope there won't be another one that scares you so soon. (Strangely enough, arachnophobia is not among my many fears, so I tend to carry spiders outside on my palm and only use the mug-and-paper trick for the really fast ones, but I sympathize anyway!).

Martin's morally dubious characters are what makes his story so compelling. You never know what they will do next!

I do envy you. I dislike heights and am scared of sharks but can avoid those. Spiders are everywhere!

And that little creature got taken safely outside where the animals wouldn't play with him. He's welcome to the garden, I just hope he doesn't come back in again.

If this had happened to me, you would have heard my shriek from across the continent. :) Those who have heard my "scream of spider discovery" are never the same again... :)

Which book are you on right now?

I used to have a spider scream but I lost it when I had to be brave for the kids. I just squeak now.

I'm on part 1 of A Storm of Swords. Loving it. :D

I'm a coward when it comes to spiders, especially ones that big! My hubby is my "spider man" !! It must have been big tho, to make your cats do a double take! I'd have loved to see that! lol

Tabi's eyes were HUGE. I don't think she knew what it was.

Lol! What a lovely picture you paint of you and Tabi and spider! I'm sure the poor beastie was just as freaked as you and the cats.

I don't mind sharing the house with wee spiders and tend to just leave them to get on with their business. Once they reach a certain size though they get relocated to the garden.

This one was FAR too chunky to stay inside. I put up with smaller versions, and the spindly web dwelling house spiders are funny, but the big Tegs make me shiver.

Eh?! Tegs??

Googled "tegs" and interwebs tells me they are: two year old sheep, a Swedish football team or thermoelectric generators. I'm not surprised the cat was alarmed to find a sheep team running around your house! To say nothing of the Swedish football team...

Tegenaria - the massive jobs that scamper round on the floor. Also known as Cardinal spiders because according to legend, Cardinal Wolsey had a lot in Hampton court and HATED them. Wouldn't want one of those running up your cassock would you?

Ah, yes. The ones that masquerade as bits of fluff on the carpet and then suddenly *move*. I squeak too. I had two (at least, I think it was two, not the same one twice) a couple of years ago that suddenly appeared running up the curtains behind the computer. ...Just where you *can't* do the mug/cardboard trick on them. AAAaaarrrggghhh!!!!!!!!

Ah, now I have a way of dispatching curtain spiders. Get your biggest wooden spoon - one with a long handle - and put the bowl behind the curtain where the spider is sitting, then give it a sharp rap with a hammer! provides just enough resistance to dispatch the beastie.

Yes, I know they do no harm technically but sometimes, honestly, it's them or me.

But, but, but ... don't you then have Squished Spider ON the curtains? Ewwww...

Also, if they're running (fast) up the curtains, there's no time to find a wooden spoon and hammer...

Well yes - but it's better from a self esteem point of view. Screaming and running out of the room feels more positive if you're going to fetch a spoon and a hammer to 'deal with the problem'.
