PoNT drew cartoons for Punch during the 1930s. I was looking through a collection of his cartoons yesterday and found a lovely series that attempted to define the British character. I like some of them so much that I thought I'd scan them and share.

Firstly:

I would definitely have this as a header for my journal if I knew the arcane secret of CSS and stuff.

This one reminded me of [livejournal.com profile] mylodon

And finally:

:D I love PoNT.

Yeah, that was who I thought of for #2, as well. I wonder why...

I wonder why...

I just had this strange unaccountable feeling that a great thrashing heap of men ripping at each others clothes - all in the interest of goodsportsmanship - might appeal.

Of course I might be wrong?

Oh wow, Sian Phillips as Livia! What a woman.

Actually I do feel inclined to, if not actually sparkle, at least glimmer today. The weather is nice, I have illicit chocolate and have written a bit more piratey stuff. Wednesday has been a nice day.

Glimmering indeed? Was it the piratey stuff that put the twinkle in your eye? ;)

Livia is indeed awesome. She put the fear of god in me when I was eight and I have never quite recovered. Sian Phillips still terrifies me! Btw do you know there is an interesting connection between I, Claudius and Archie Kennedy? Have a look at this: It's All Connected (http://anteros-lmc.livejournal.com/17461.html).

I've always adored Pont. I'm trying to remember if he did the cartoon of the little boy imagining what the people in the pew behind him in church looked like. Can't find a reference on google.

(And thanks for thinking of me!)

Yes, that was in the book too. I'll ask to borrow the book again. He has such a lovely quirky humour.

Take a look at [livejournal.com profile] carfiniel and see if you like that. I can't figure out a way to get the words off the header, but I can give you the CSS for how I have it, and maybe someone else would know how to erase the words...
