I'm feeling at a loose end this week. There have been a lot of changes over the past six months and I need to find some kind of new direction. Now the pirate exhibition is finally up I've got some extra brain width and should get on with some of my WIPs but - I dunno. My mind is wandering.

Part of the problem is that my daughter has taken over the only place in the house that was sort of mine. I'd made a quiet corner in the spare bedroom with a desk, an old PC, and bookshelves made from the drawers of extinct pieces of bedroom furniture where I could keep all my reference books. She's decided she needs the space for sewing and has moved in there bags and baggage. Which leaves me trying to write in the living room with the TV/radio/livestock/husband to distract me. I'm SO distractable. I need earplugs and blinkers, and maybe a bag over my head.

Last time I got stuck without a quiet place to retreat to I took to RPGs. I've about given that up, since the game is in a state of extreme lassitude, which is good. It has become a bit of an albatross - something I do because I feel guilty if I let people down - but recently it occurred to me that if they were that keen on playing they would be whether I played or not. Should be problem solved, but I still feel guilty. I guess once a Mum always a Mum.

*sigh* I guess it's decisions time. Today I'm going to have a long hard look at my WIPs, including all the co-written ones, and see which are closest to being finished, which need the most work, which are salvageable with a lot of rewriting and which are so horrible they need quietly burying at sea.

I'll make a list. Lists are good.

In other news: the dog has hiccups. He does it deliberately and it means he wants something. It's hard to concentrate on plot and characterisation with a hiccuping dog drooling into your Croc.

Don't feel guilty about giving up your RPG - it is your time, and there are enough responsibilities in life already even without those taken on voluntarily.

Good luck with your list!

I'm staring at my list in bafflement. How could I have started so many stories and not finished any of them? I used to finish stuff. My brain needs to de-butterfly.

Yay pirates?

Also, I was randomly thinking about Mac the other day which made me think about Charlie.

Pirates can happen to anyone.

Awww, Mac. I sometimes amuse myself by reading random threads from MM [we archived the whole lot before GJ went belly up] and was giggling over one of his a few weeks back. Charlie still gets some action because he's an archetype now and I can write his character in almost any context with some adjustments for the period, place etc. But I just don't have the energy to spend night after night in a community producing to order so I think I'll avoid RP in future. It was fun back in 2005/6 though.

I think I need a holiday too. Just me, my laptop and a pile of new notebooks and pens. No radio, no TV, no Wifi. Bliss.

Paul wants to come. When he retires he plans to do what he once discussed with you and visit Oregon to buy a container load of bow wood, so it might happen yet. :D

Hiccups? LOL, I didn't know they could do that, but it kinda... figures. Wow. You never stop learning.

They are very theatrical hiccups, designed to impress upon us that he's SO hungry he's empty of all but air - I think. And he's a big dog so they are loud. We were scared when he first did it, thinking he was having a fit, but the vet assured us that all his breed do it. Don't get a flat coat (http://www.kaydinkennels.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/flat-coated-retriever.jpg) and stay hiccup free.

There is a sort of sunporch off the spare bedroom here; you can have it all to yourself when you guys show up in StL (I haven't given up yet...)

:) here's hoping. Paul has started talking about a trip to the US when he retires and coming to see you would definitely be on the list. For the moment I'm going to kick and shout until Jen gets herself out of my space and takes all her gubbins with her. *puts on 'mum' face*
