Sally:

very attractive

Maru:
yes very, and already the suits as we know them

Sally:
i'm sort of assuming that shields are spades and flowers are clubs?
and there seem to be bells

Maru:
oh yes, those are the 'south german' colours that are still in use in traditional card games here

Maru:

Maru:
make it 17th, then it would be set during the 30 years war where people didn't have the time to actively frown at chaotic relationships all that much...

The cool part to me is that they know the game these cards are for! I was equally impressed when Renbourn tried to show me the game they used to play with Tarot cards.

Tarocco! One of my favourite books has a whole sub plot about tarocco and the fact that the cards 'want blood'. :D lovely stuff.

Pretty cards too.

I was madly interested in 1618-1648 between the ages of 14 and 21 or so (I wrote a novel-length story about two officers in the 30 Years' War then, and while it was not a particularly good story, it kept me busy for several years, and I am still fond of the characters). So if you need any help with that time period, just tell me! My research folder must still be in the cellar somewhere, and while most of the literature I had access to then is in German, I can certainly look things up.

That's a very generous offer. Thanks so much. I'll make a note to poke you when I bite the bullet. Need to finish other stuff first though.

I have characters who have stayed with me. They can be good and undemanding company.

How cool! I just shared that with my class... It wasn't Roman, they were not impressed (time moves slowly on testing days)

This (http://www.ablogabouthistory.com/) is the blog to follow if they like Romans. He picks up on all kinds of fascinating stuff.
