Well, it's been a week and I realised that I haven't posted my reactions to that Evanescence concert.
Hmmm, what can I say? Moshing is fun, crowd surfing looks bloody dangerous and I've never before been anywhere where it was so loud that I could see my sternum vibrating.
I liked the queue. We were in it long enough to observe all the people around us and make up stories about them all. One in particular I admired - November in Wales is on the chilly side and it wasn't a nice night with a gusty wind bearing dashes of cold rain but this young lady was wearing platform soled sandals (similar to a pair I had in 1974 but let's not go there) and what looked like a vest (in the US vests are waistcoats aren't they? In the UK they are tubular undergarments worn on the upper body with narrow straps across the shoulders - frequently they are woolly) Her vest was a very up-market black satin one that just about covered her buttocks - we gave her the benefit of the doubt and guessed she was wearing a thong as well. Oh and the ensemble was completed by plentiful amounts of goosebumps. She was blue by the time the guards let us in and shortly after that I realised that there were others present who made her look overdressed. Laura, Mike's gf, huffed and said she was glad she hadn't brought him.
There were 3 bands - Atomic 26, who, bless them, were vastly enthusiastic and energetic and will be very good one day I'm sure if nobody does themselves a mischief. Someone loved them because I'm sure I saw some underwear being thrown onto the stage. Big underwear- either the lead singer's mum was present or someone had thrown their boxers. Finger Eleven were next up and I had a little snigger to myself over the name - Laura and Jenny wanted to know why as they hadn't heard the old joke but it was too loud for me to tell them. It was about this time that I noticed balloons bouncing across the heads of the crowd and commented on their peculiar shape and boring colour. The girls dissolved into rude shrieks of laughter and began to bellow that they weren't balloons at all - I couldn't hear and so had the delight of hearing my daughter and Laura bellow the word 'condoms' into one of those quiet moments.
There was a pause then for 20 minutes or so while they reorganised the stage and carried out the casualties - there didn't appear to have been any fighting but plenty of people had fainted from the heat. The girls had a drink each. We sat on the floor in amongst all the broken plastic cups and they texted everyone they could think of. I was surprised at the number of mobile phones - it's automatic to me to switch mine off if I go to any performance - but the music was so loud no ringtones could be heard and they seemed to be in constant use with people holding them up so, presumably, the people they rang could hear the music as well. I texted Paul to say that I had gone deaf and could he not pick us up at 10 but at 10.45 instead.
Then the lights went down again and the place exploded! Amy Lee is a dinky little thing isn't she? But what a voice. Unfortunately the sound wasn't too good. the beauty of the child's voice is that it has such an astonishing range but the bass was so loud you couldn't hear her properly unless she was singing in the higher registers. It didn't matter though because everyone else sang along.
Laura had warned us not to get too close to the front - dangerous for little people - so we were about halfway back. Unfortunately both girls are under five foot so they couldn't see much at all. Laura is very thin as well as short and I found that if she put her hand on my shoulder I could lift her like they do in the rugby line outs and throw her up so she was about seven feet tall - she had a good view for the second she was up there. Doing it for Jenny was impossible unfortunately because she weighs at least eight stone now. However I did boost her up far enough to get a view of the stage a couple of times and just being there seemed to be enough for her.
Cardiff International Arena is probably quite a small one by international standards but it seemed enormous to me. There were several thousand people packed into it and I was a little nervous about the kids getting squashed but everyone was very jolly and cooperative about moving around. We got out with no trouble, found Paul and both girls went to sleep on the way home. It as a fun evening and I'd do it again - if it was the right band. HIM is the supporting band for Ozzy Osbourne - now that I would like to see.

Bear in mind you went an Evenesence concert... Ieeeee don't think you're getting that old. ;)

Now there's a trans-Atlantic similarty. The desire to knock the cop's hat off. Of course we've got sheriff's deputies and state police officers that wear HUGE brimed hats that just... Make... It... Sooooooo tempting. ;)

Sorry, Matt. System crashed and I had to restart my comp. Feel free to shout me again - it's nice to chat.
I know what you mean about those hats - the bigger they are the more they beg to be used as a frisbee!!
