[livejournal.com profile] innerslytherin pointed out that in my last update I actually expressed and opinion by saying I wasn't going to - this fandom has too many memes. Not too sure what a meme is - unless it's all about "Me, Me!" but since I have I will state my most avidly held opinion about the whle fandom business, whether it's HP, LotR or some little book no ones ever heard of and it's this:
Fandoms should be fun. They should be fun for everyone. If someone gets a different sort of fun out of it that's their choice. If someone wants to write mpreg fics (shudder) and thinks they are 'lovely' they can. If someone wants to write BDSM they can - I don't have to read it. If I want to write silly stuff about characters who are canonically dead I can - I'm not actually hurting anyone by doing so because my fics usually have warnings on them. If I want to use OCs, take liberties with canon, use my imagination, I think that should be permitted too. The fandom's such a huge place, there's room for us all to float the boat of our choice. This does mean, of course, that there's a place for Mary Sues as well... but one must be fair.

*deep intake of breath* Ooooh steady on! *g* I agree entirely with your post, although I will naturally moan on about people who don't agree with my opinions, but they have every right to hold them, and everyone has ever right to write what the hell they like. I don't have to read it unless I want to. And you're also right. It is about fun. If it stops being fun it's time to leave and do something else.

Of course we all want people to line up in droves to read our own fics-- goes without saying-- but You are quite right: the human mind is a place of infinite variety. And we wouldn't be doing this at all if we wanted to have a "normal" hobby. We'd be gluing bits of felt together for Christmas tree ornaments or something. I, too, say anything goes. And for reading matter, we'll all tend to pick writing that somehow appeals to us-- we DON'T HAVE to read the rest. Of the hundreds of people out there writing, and reading, there are only a few whose good opinion I actively seek. The rest are just a bonus! Of course, that might change if I ever learn how to write for real, and want to publish something... :D

Amen! I mean, we're all here to love HP (or the fandom of your choice), aren't we? It's a bit like stabbing at your own countrymen. I say, let them write what they will; it's not like they're forcing us to sit through their fics.

In a recent class we learned that a definition of "meme" is an idea that spreads like a virus, if that helps.
