Dec. 20th, 2003 11:23 pmJust been to see RotK....squeee! Sorry about that - it just sneaked out! I even had a little snivel but not at the bits where I think I was supposed to snivel.
(Errrmm - think I'd better allow for spoilers hadn't I?)
Each time they ran cavalry onto massed archers I was wriggling in my seat whimpering 'Remember Crecy, remember Agincourt'. And, of course, they got slaughtered. The Rohirrim (please not Rohans) were lucky there were enough of them left to get splattered by the oliphaunts. Talking of which elf+oliphaunt=sheerentertainment...not necessarily a valid bit of the film, perhaps if it had been left out we'd have got to see Saruman... but it was still jolly good fun and timed to perfection! I've seen some criticism that the oliphaunt silliness 'spoiled' Eowyn's big moment. Well, I did a little straw poll (me, Jenny, Paul and two of Mike's friends who were in the seats next to us) and we didn't feel it stole her thunder at all. Eowyn kicked Nazgul ass very effectively then collapsed just as she does in the book. Cutting to another part of the battlefield gave her time to come to her senses and crawl over to poor dying Theoden, which would been pretty boring to watch in real time, and since we were going elsewhere it was nice to have something to break the tension a bit with a couple of laughs, then we could go back to Eowyn for another dose of angst without feeling bludgeoned by all that emotion.
It was great fun. I particularly enjoyed listening to Jenny sueeing over the elves. Legolas has a few rivals in her affections now. The two elven smiths who reforge Narsil, for instance, or the little dark haired cup cake who tries to persuade Arwen not to go back to Rivendell. We had our usual 'spot the campest elf' contest - and in the sad absence of Haldir couldn't come to a unanimous decision - and it was very very eerie to see someone who looked so much like our Michael riding the horse just in front of Arwen's close to the beginning of the film. We are planning to tease him about it when a whole gang of us go to see it again on Tuesday. We are eager to see it again but are even more eager to get our hands on the extended version - SO MUCH has been left out, not always to the films detriment, but I particularly wanted to see Saruman and Grima get theirs! And poor old Christopher Lee...he should have had his opportunity for a last sneer! Roll on November 2004.
