Jul. 4th, 2006 01:40 pmThanks
innerslytherin for the nudge. Is it really 3 weeks? S'pose it must be.
Now what to say?
Happy 4th July to all the poor oppressed citizens of the USA celebrating their freedom from the iron heel of Tony Blair. I looked really hard this morning for British POV 4th July cards but there really didn't seem to be much call for them. There's a dearth of 'apology for past injustices' cards and that seems to be a really big gap in the market. One of the things about being English we all have to get used to is that you owe the whole world a big heartfelt sorry for - well everything really - from the Boston Tea Party, the Henry II supporting Dermot of Leinster back in the 12th century and starting the whole Irish question. And that's just going BACK from 1776. The other way is too horrible to contemplate. I'll lobby the ecard providers and see if they can't come up with something suitable in time for next year. Failing that I'll make my own, 'kay.
um - what else.
Oh - books. It's not often I start a novel and give up twenty pages in but I'm afraid Jonathan Lunn did it for me. C S Forester and Patrick O' Brien may be hard acts to follow but this guy didn't even buy a map. His hero, Kit Killigrew, is psychotic, but in a boring sort of way. I wouldn't have thought that possible. Also, in jokes are okay but REALLY! Naming the ship's surgeon of an American frigate Deforest and having the captain refer to him as Bones??? No - just no!!
I'll continue this stream of conciousness later when I get home from another exciting day making sure the fossils don't stray.

Date: 2006-07-04 04:08 pm (UTC)Honestly I don't know if many people pay attention to the reasons for Independence Day anymore. Most people here seem to look at it as a good excuse for a cookout and beer drinking, and fireworks. I was a history major and even I like the fireworks best. *G*

Date: 2006-07-04 06:14 pm (UTC)Remember the first Star Trek? In that the ship's doctor - Dr McCoy - was referred to as 'Bones' and was played by an actor named Deforest Kelly. What's the betting Lunn cut his teeth on Star Trek fan fic and couldn't resist the joke?
