Teenage version -

* drop the phone down the lavatory or in the sink or in the garden pond

* scream

* fish it out swearing

* take the phone to bits and dry everything you can with tissue

* put it back together, turn it on and swear when it fails to work

* notice that there's water inside the screen and swear even louder

* take it apart and wrap the bits in tissue to make a package

* shove package down into the middle of a bag of silica gel

* leave for 48 hours, whinging

* reassemble, recharge and dance round wildly before texting all your friends.

Adult version -

* don't drop phone in water

* if you do, go straight to drying and wrapping and burying in silica gel, Screaming, swearing and whinging is optional.

Okay, so not many people have large bags of possibly carcinogenic silica gel on a shelf in the kitchen but almost every time you buy a pair of shoes or a handbag there's a little packet of the gel in with them to keep them dry. It's probably worth hanging onto them and then, in an emergency, packing them round the electrical item you want dried out.

The silica gel idea is brilliant - I have a small collection of the little bags that I've been saving up until they came in handy. I can use them the next time I drop my phone into the bath, which of course will never happen again...

Wow - I will remember that now! I'll get myself a tin, collect the silica gel in it, and if I ever drop electronics in water, I'll try that.-

I think I threw all mine out in case my son ate them... but, you can get dehumidifiers that sit on windowsills and usually that stuff is silica gel too.... Might have to try it on the freeview box remote, which small boy drooled into the other day.

Wow. I had no idea. I'll have to start saving those. Only a matter of time before my phone accidentially takes a dive into a puddle. (I live in a swampy area.)
