• Carlito stood still, James' knuckles against the nape of his neck making him want to shiver.



• “If it’s all right with you, Gran,” he said, “in September I should like to transfer to St Melangell’s School of Practical Magic."



• She had rather hoped that her gardener would be some applecheeked oldster, possibly with one of those tweed caps and a pipe, maybe with a soft local accent and a fund of amusing stories, but instead he was a leggy young man with tight jeans and windswept black curls and, bright against the skin of his neck, a silver hoop earring.



• "He was scared to death, angry as a hornet and covered in his own sick…but I don’t think he was lying or imagining things. Something certainly happened out there."



• “Your word is my law, just as King Henry’s word is your law, and I will carry out your commands as far as I am able within the bounds,” he added earnestly, “imposed by God’s law and my conscience.”



• David was looking at him, he could feel, and he kept his eyes on their hands, so saw when David raised his other hand and closed it gently around Gwyn’s wrist, the thumb brushing lightly over the pulse point.



• Then he thought about love in all its various wonderful forms, and how it could endure despite separation and prejudice, and about the transcendent look on Gracie’s face when she had spoken the only word he had ever heard her utter.



• Arms wrapped around his head, he felt the denim of his jeans give and heard a shriek of brakes as the pickup flashed past him, and one little part of him wailed with terror while another spat "Hah, missed, loser!"



• "I've always said that looks like yours are completely wasted on a heterosexual. Honestly, dear boy, it's your duty to spread the gladness."



• “Don’t pick up a weapon unless you intend to use it,” he said, gruffly and his hand lingered on Anatolios' head for a moment, the calloused fingers catching in the fine black curls of his hair.



• "I suppose one can forgive the regular witch and wizard in the street for being judgemental bigoted scaredy-cats because," he turned to the baker, "I am a very terrifying person, aren't I, Mr Kettle?"
