- Carlito stood still, James' knuckles against the nape of his neck making him want to shiver.

- She had rather hoped that her gardener would be some applecheeked oldster, possibly with one of those tweed caps and a pipe, maybe with a soft local accent and a fund of amusing stories, but instead he was a leggy young man with tight jeans and windswept black curls and, bright against the skin of his neck, a silver hoop earring.

- "I suppose one can forgive the regular witch and wizard in the street for being judgemental bigoted scaredy-cats because," he turned to the baker, "I am a very terrifying person, aren't I, Mr Kettle?"
