Random update

essayelIt's not so bad getting up early on a damp frosty morning when one can see it's going to be a nice day later.
I took the dog around the top lane this morning to stretch his legs and look at the world. He likes to 'read the papers' first thing. This involves standing with his head held high and sniffing the air - I can see his nose inflate! That gives him the headlines, then he sniffs around at ground level to get the fine detail, with occasional pauses to peruse the in-depth editorials.
He wasn't the only busy one either. They are still lambing over by Cwmgyst so there was a Landrover in the middle of a field and Mr Jenkins fussing over a ewe.
Woodpeckers, called yackles locally, are setting up their territories. One was drumming away in a big old ash above Pentre Lane and when I got close to the tree I could hear two other woodpeckers faintly, one to the east and one to the west. When I walked round to the west, he was up a huge cypress, I could just hear another drumming off to the north west.
The sun came up in a blank misty sky and it was neon orange and too weak to throw a shadow. It just warmed the colours of everything up - pink frosted fields, very edible. No clouds but SIX jets in the sky criss crossing and adding to the fading contrails. Apparently there's some kind of radio beacon in Abergavenny that they navigate by. I like to imagine the pilots getting this far and going 'Left hand down a bit'.
We saw jackdaws, magpies and crows and heard a raven [they sound like someone trying to say 'gurk' trough a mouthful of gravel] which is all pretty regular for round here, but I also saw a jay for the first time for ages. So that's five out of seven of the UK corvidae, not bad going in ten minutes.
This random witter is brought to you by my writer's block. I really want to write but think I'm too keyed up over Jen's exams [and her lack of enthusiasm for doing anything approaching work]. metallumai and celticangel76 and the borderline agoraphobia is kicking in. By this time next week I'll be frantic. But I'm determined to do it, thanks to their kindness in inviting me, I'm just going to shiver a lot and lose sleep over it first - usual MO for holidays, but this involves FLYING and flying HURTS!
Well this isn't getting the laundry done, nor yet the relaxingly slashy romance written, so I'll go and do something useful for a bit - like shout at Jen.
