Word count for yesterday
Nov. 10th, 2010 12:01 pmOnly just over the thousand yesterday. I just never got into it and in the end I gave up and went to bed. Had already written more than that by 8.30 this morning. I guess I just needed to get over some kind of writerly hump.
Actually, I know what it is - my inner editor is yammering again about all the things that need changing because they are so damn wrong. Inner-Ed seems to believe first drafts are for wimps. This probably explains why I never seem to finish anything.

Next time Kit stood by while he took his readings he flushed and said, “I suppose you think I’m making a real hash of things. I don’t suppose they do it this way in the Navy.”
His tone was both embarrassed, he was possibly recalling his comment about the hammock, and truculent but Kit sensed that it masked a real concern.
“No we don’t,” Kit said quietly. “But then we do have more – recent equipment. That cross staff could have sailed with Drake.” He grinned at Uttley. “Your readings are fine. I’m just keeping my hand in.”
Uttley still looked annoyed but his ire had turned from Kit to Vargas and Captain Dorling both of whom, he said, were more inclined to point out faults than praise strengths.
“Isn’t that always the way,” Kit sighed. “I haven't seen you do anything wrong, honestly. But if you think I can help, just ask, and if I see you doing something that might get the ship in trouble I’ll say but it’ll be just between the two of us. All right?”
Uttley nodded and applied himself to his equipment without a fumble, while Kit turned his face up to the sun, closed his eyes and soaked up the warmth.
